Default Checking numbers on engine block

Hi Guys,

We are still sorting out what we have on the '77 we inherited.

Thanks to this board, I found the pad where the VIN numbers are stamped on the engine block. Problem is, I can't read them, the paint is too thick and/or uneven.

I am assuming I could wire brush or wire wheel the paint off to get a better look at the numbers, but I wanted to check here first before I did anything stupid.

Thanks for any advice!

Greg

First I would try some degreaser or thinner to try to remove the gunk and paint.

Do not wire brush it off. If it is numbers matching you might ruin the numbers. You need to get some paint stripper and just put it on that area. Do not use anything abrasive.

dont use a whire brush, or wheel..or anything harsh like sand paper....you will damage the broach marks & possibly destroy some numbers if light & faint. Try solvents first......
