Default A C3 for me?

Having just finished a '64 body off, I'm looking for another project(not a body off). I've come across a '68 coupe locally which has sat in a garage for the last 24 years. It has a perfect body, painted in the typical mid 80's color shifting paint, etc. It hasn't run in a five years, and according to the owner it has a rebuilt(I think original) small block engine, rebuilt TH400, good brakes, nice original wheels. The center section of the dash is out of it, the owner was trying to install a tilt column, hit some snags and lost interest in the project so it sat until now. I told him make it run and let me drive it or I'm not interested.

From what I saw underneath yesterday, it is rust free(desert car). This weekend I will put it up on stands and have a good look at the bottom side.
Assuming the drive train is ok and nothing looks amiss, I may buy it. He wants 10K, which I think is a bit high given the condition.

What do you all think it's worth.?

If he can get it running and the birdcage is in decent shape I think that the price is good if You can live with that paint on it. It would even be worth painting if the rest is in good shape.

I'll probably paint it as I won't be able to live with it. It's always been garaged, and the paint is in good enough shape to wet sand it and repaint without going back to bare glass.

Since there was no tilt for '68, has the owner hacked up the car trying to make the swap?

Is the original steering column with the car? It's one year only and you want it.

Does the owner have the dash parts not currently on the car? They are also one year only and you will want them.

Any original documentation with this car?

$10K is not unreasonable depending on what you're looking at. There were less 68 coupes produced than convertibles. You will want to check all the coupe goodies (tops, rear window tray, etc.) since you could have a dickens of a time trying to replace missing items.

No hack job on the dash, just taken apart and he has all the pieces and the column.

Hi CS,
I'll second Mike's thoughts.
You really need to determine if ALL the pieces are there. Finding some 68 parts could really distort whether 10k, or a bit less, is a good price for you.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan

I assume that is the new column as that is not the original steering wheel.

That's correct. The owner has the original column and steering wheel.

A nice '68 SB coupe would be worth around $15k IMHO.

If you put it back together, spend $2-3k on paint, another $1k on others you're in the ball park.

Hey, you're from Hooterville too. Does the Cannonball stop there everyday?

Thanks for your thoughts.

That's happening tomorrow. I'm going with tools, floor jack, the works! Gotta check this thing out completely before I pull the trigger.

Well , I bought it. Now the fun begins. I think it has potential to be a pretty nice car without a ton of work.
