When We started restoring my 82, the windshield frame needed touching up...No rust, but the Vin tag was bad rusted and had some rust under it....mainly surface.
My bodyshop...drilled out the rivets to check under it and to clean the vin tag.
Well guess what....During the restore, the VIN PLATE GOT LOST.
I knew they had given it to me, however I had no idea where it went. Ive tore my office up several times looking for it, last 3-4 months ripped every room of my house apart as well as my storage building hunting it.
Even as of last night at 11:30 I was going thru my bookcase books and filing cabinet looking for it. No luck. This one item I own was lost. I could account for everything I owned except this.
Well lo and behold as a last resort today I went in my office and picked up a organizer that sits on my desk and shook it....(Ive looked through this organizer at least a dozen times and no luck)...all of a sudden i hear "CLINK" and something hit the floor. I looked down and there it was...glistening with its rust and rough black paint. MY VIN PLATE!!!!
The bad news is they can't pop rivet it back in if the windshield has already been installed.
Actually..Ive held off on the windshield til i found this or a replacement. I had even started looking at a restamping for me. I had already started with paper work collection and and process submission. The other good part of this is I manage bodyshops and service departments for GM and have the correct pop rivets at my disposal with proper paperwork.
Hi hp,
I believe the tags had a dark finish on them but I don't know if it was paint. The rivets were unpainted since I believe the tag went on after 'black-out' was done.

Alan
