On my wife's 73, the head lights start to flash when on hi-beam. It doesn't matter if the engine is running or not (vibration). There is a new head light switch installed but????
Since both high-beam headlights are doing this [I assume], but only the high-beams are doing this, there must be a wiring problem or the new headlight switch is defective. Personally, I would suspect the new switch.
Actually, on second thought... it sounds more like a problem with the contacts in the [foot-operated] hi-beam switch.
All four lights are on with the brights and all four flash together.
I have bumped/jiggled/pushed and screwed with the dimmer switch but still don't rule it out. I have bought a new light switch and will be installing it when I get time.
You might try pulling the 3 wire connector at the dimmer and putting a jumper between the blue and green, then turn on the HL switch and see if they flash. If they do still flash then jumper from green to 12v ( this willl bypass the HL switch) and see if they flash.
And if you follow Rogers test above and they don't flash....
It's the headlamp switch. Inside there is a a heat contact beryllium copper switch made to break contact should the switch become overheated. This switch in the lamp switch is defective.
I feel pretty certain that this is your problem.. you'll see this in the picture below. In all the time I've been doing this I've seen this happen one other time about two years ago. I've probably sold a gazillion of these switches so I'd say the problem is very limited but your symptoms sound exactly like the defective switch we had.
I think your on track because I was thinking it was acting like a Flasher unit. As soon as it warms it would disconnect then reconnect when it cools......
So with that said It'll be off to change the switch soon... Hope on Saturday. I'll keep you all posted with the results.
Thanks to all that have posted or about to post.

Your exactly right.. it almost acts like a flasher.. Or you have a police option...
Hate it for you but this really sounds like the case.
