i just fired up my 68' 427/390 for the first time after re-build. the starter BARELY could turn the engine over, and now........after breaking the camshaft in, it can't re-start the engine, it cranks VERY slow, and start "clicking". (the battery is brand new, and checks out good)
my question is this: is there a big difference between a bb starter and a small block starter..someone told me that a small block starter casing is tapered towards the front of the starter and a bb is not. is that true?this is a Delco "OEM" replacement starter, but doesn't seem to have the UMPH to turn this engine over...any ideas???? thanks, Rick
the correct starter for a 427 standard or automatic is a staggered cast iron nose starter with the field connection approximately 3/4 of a inch gap between the switch and field post for a HD starter.......
I know it's not original equipment, but after having years of unreliable starting (even after I bought a new OEM starter) I gave in an installed one of those high gear ratio starters. Haven't had a single problem since then. BTW, I have the same type of BB engine.
a BB starter is bigger then a SB starter. and should have the short or small front bracket to the engine block. and make sure you have the bracket on the starter. and like above check all connections
Make sure you have the ground from out board mounting bolt to the frame.
2X and changing to a different design starter. Been running Hooker sidemounts for quite some time, and have gone to the GM mini starter from a 2500 pick-up, or any GM truck/van that has the large ring gear with the stagged bolt mounting pattern.

thanks to all with the feedback so far....ground from outboard mounting bold to frame???? i have a ground cable from the engine block(where the forward starter bracket mounts to block) to the frame. should the ground strap go to a starter bolt to the frame, would this make a difference?? thanks, Rick
