Default Purpose and necessity

On the drivers side top of the gas tank on my '74 is what is referred to as "Corvette Gas Tank Separator, 1970-1974 ", or also called "Roll Over Valve". What exactly is its purpose and is it a necessity? Please let me know. Thanks!

The valve allows gas vapours to vent to the charcoal can located behind the front driver's side inner fender.

It also has a check ball in it that prevents gas from flowing out of the tank in the event of a rollover.

If your vapor cannister is non-functional and the hose from the fuel tank is plugged off, you don't need it. If your cannister is still hooked up correctly and you have a roll-over accident, you do.
