I plugged my new Tom-Tom into my 1978 Vette cigarette lighter socket and noticed it wasn't charging. My shop guy said that the old cig socket configuration won't make the proper contact with the Tom-Tom charging cable.
He suggested that I buy an adapter from an auto parts store. I did some searching online and found a couple of them, including a dual 12 volt socket adapter.
Does this make sense or sound reasonable? Anyone else using one?
The cigarette lighters in the 1960's and 1970's car were only for "left-handed" cigarettes. That may be why it is not working.
Seriously, I can't think how a cigarette lighter has changed in cars over the years. I have never used the lighter in my 1977. I will go out and see if my lighter will power up my gps.
The bottom of the cig lighter socket is usually pretty cruddy and sometimes doesn't make good connection. Pull your courtesy light fuse and clean it and see if it works then.
1st.. does your lighter work?.. if it does not work then your tom tom won't either.
there are lots of after market lighters out that you can get from autozone/napa or even the more correct ones from the corvette houses to replace your existing one..
no I never heard of a different lighter configuration.. i thought they had been the same for decades...
mine works fine for my tom tom, and my phone charger, and everything else..
I purchased a plug unit with a pigtail, wired it to the cig lighter wiring and ran the pigtail out from under the console on the passenger side. It is easy to reach and it works fine.
