What do you feel the proper oil pressure should be? The old 350 I had required 20/50 oil to get 25 lbs. at idle and 35 lbs at 3000 rpm. (Yes the bearings were shot). I'm running 10/30 in my new 383. It has a stock oil pump. I get 70 lbs + at start up, 35 lbs at idle hot and 65 lbs at 3000 hot. I feel a lot better with the higher oil pressure or this a little on the high side? I could use 5/20 oil to lower the pressure. What do you think? Thanks
I have heard an old rule of thumb is 10 lbs pressure per thousand rpm. Me I have broken thumbs and I like your numbers a lot better. I wouldn`t worry about it at all.
It would help you to know exactly what pump you have, but if it is a stock Melling m55 (most are) then you most likely have a 60psi relief spring.
Just adjust your oil viscosity, so that the pressure (with accurate gauge)
stays below that pressure for 99% of engine running when at temp and rpm.
Running over relief raises oil temp drastically, and one of the purposes of the oil is to carry heat from the bearings.
