Fiber optic system
I have a 71 LT1 that someone wants to buy. He asked me if the fiber optics work? I didn't know the car had fiber optics. How would I know and where is it?

On your shifter console should be a series of colored lamp buttons. They should be labeled headlamps, rear lamps, etc..
underneath they are connected to each light fixture by a fiber optic cable....very high tech for its age...
When the fixture is lit up, if they are connected properly and unbroken, they will transmit the light to the button on console. Pretty cool overall...especially at night..and are a great warning if a lamp is out.
Problem is that the optic cables get very brittle and dirty at ends preventing enough light to pass through and illuminate the button.
Search the forum and you'll find many posts regarding the fiber optics and many repairs.

He's talking about the tiny lights on your console labeled "Left tail lamp, License, Right tail lamp". They are not lights, actually the end of the fiber optics carrying the light from the back. You should be able to turn on your headlights and see them come on. Better to try it at night or they are hard to see.

WOW Nice looking car
You have a 71 corvette, and an LT to boot, and you are not familiar with the workings of it.
STILL owning this and not knowing about something so obvious about it just made me think someone might have been trying to take advantage
I still don't understand.

68 shown; 71 is similar. Fiber optics bezel on the console just behind the shift **** in the pic. Indicators for low and high beam headlights and front parking lights.
Rear indicators are in the tail piece of the console trim plate.
Personally, if I was looking at the possible purchase of an LT-1, fiber optics would not be a major concern.

Price
Thanks for posting the pictures. My computer stills are lacking. I'm thinking of asking $28,500 but I would rather trade. Do you think the price is in the ball park?

Hi Dax,
Whether $28,500 is in the ballpark or not depends on what's under the hood.

Alan
