Default Removing Headlights - Process???

73 Vert:

I need to rebuild the headlights. I would like to remove the front "bumper" and take them out through there.

Will that work? I hate to go to all the trouble of taking off the front bumper and then find out - oops, you have to go out through the radiator side...

thanks

udornf4, need to remove them through the headlight openings where they sit. Get a AIM or GM dealer repair manual which is good. I've never heard or removed them through bumper opening. I wouldn't remove the bumper. Thanks

Remove and install from the bottom. My advice is not to try to fish them through from the top side.

Good advice on purchasing the AIM and the chassis service manual.

They won't remove through the top. They have side mounts inside that prevent that. I already tried that. Perhaps I missed something, though.

I'll take a look at removing through the bottom. Actually, I didn't look at that option.

thanks to all

i couldn't remove the lights thru the opening , or the grille-unless the light was "collapsed". by that i mean the four springs were removed and the pivot bar they attach to is removed. that allows the operating mechanism to fold up and reduce the height of the unit. it will then slide out without any problem.

What he said^

If you feel the need for a challenge, let me tell you to put multiple layers of masking tape around the openings. The horseshoe can scratch the heck out of the paint without even trying. (Ask me how I know)

Remove them from the bottom as suggested. Less potential damage to the paint & body.

WELL I I had to replace the RF headlight door on my 75 a few years ago and I removed it and reistalled it from the top. To remove from the top you have to unhook all wires, springs, and levers. Prop the door open use a allen wrench loose the allen screws then lossen pivot pin. Shift pins out of the way and TADA light assembly comes right out. Reinstall by reversing this process. I'm not on any drugs by the way, worked for me. Thanks

I just removed both from my 73 and I went out the bottom. Granted, I have no reason to protect my paint (yet) because we're on the "disassembly" side of the restoration. I chose to go out the bottom for two reasons, 1) gravity was on my side as I was working alone. 2) given the size and shape of the headlight support frame itself it just didn't seem worthwhile to try and fish it up through a smaller, rectangular hole.

Good luck on your project!

This sounds like a viable option too...when I went out the bottom with mine I was removing the entire assembly. If you leave the support framework in place and pull the headlight at the pivot pins....that works too.

Top or bottom, I prefer the top. Lots of tape, patience and time. When it gets to you walk away and try again, alignment is difficult.
