I learned this riding small motorcycles in Indonesia.
First... think that everything on the road, cars, pedestrians, bikes, oxen, chickens, etc. got out of bed with the sole purpose of killing you. It is up to you to watch out for you.
Second...If you are passing it, then at least you know what the hell it is doing. Don't drive a little below the traffic speed watching other road hazards (listed above), because you will get run over from behind. Keep your speed just a little faster than everything else, that way you are only having to watch what is up ahead. I don't suggest swerving in and out of traffic, just keep it where you are passing, not being passed.
Drive safe, and please stay sober and stay off the phone.
Frankly, It happens in both of my cars, the Chrysler 300 and the Vette, and at about the same rate. So I think I am going to side with those saying its just the way people are driving now-days.
It has become so blase that people zone out and drive on autopilot.
On the other hand I must admit I was little bit tempted to signal, as if I was going to merge into the fast lane, the other day in front of the asshat riding a wheelie on his crotch-rocket up the freeway.
Being tailgated in a C3 is an anxious situation since there's really no rear end collision protection. As far as safety goes, I consider my 68 to be a 4 wheeled motorcycle. In the event of a collision, I dont' think the body would offer much protection, maybe a little from the birdcage.
Actually, the tearing of the fibers in fiberglas absorbs more energy than the crumpling of steel. The Corvette body gives greater collision protection than many of the cars of the era. Of course, today's cars are much better, but your '68 isn't as bad as you think. Not like I'd want to get rammed in the rear in my '70.
I haven't had too much trouble with the 68, although it's loud (factory sidepipes).
Ummmm, I'm not an expert, but I'm pretty sure that factory side pipes on C3s were a one year only item in '69, right?
In my 75, not so much, well a couple times, its usually girls, that turn their head and not pay attention, and swerve into my lane... its pretty crappy deal, but at the same time, i dont think chicks should be able to drive haha
I can only say that I tend to drive my cars in a "cautiously aggressive" manner. If you don't get out of other folks' way, they'll run you over. So, if in a congested group of cars, I just get away from them as soon as I can. And, as mentioned above, always anticipate that others will make the worst possible choice while driving their cars. So far, so good....
Exactly the way I drive the Vette & the Harley...slightly agressive!! I take the lead...that way, I know where they are...behind me Muddy
i had some punk kids a few years back that were screwing with me in the vette... they would tail gate, speed to the side/swerve/etc.. i played it cool until we came to a stop light and they were boxed in... i stepped out of my vette (considering that my vette is low and i'm tall, i dont need to open the door when the tops are off/windows are down) and went to the driver and gave him an earful and kicked his rear quarter panel in...he took off after that .....
sometimes the idiots need to be checked here and there....

I appreciate your frustration, but what you did was risky for yourself. Guns are so easy to get these days and at any age ; you could have taken a bullet . Its better to pick up the cell phone and call it in to the local Police .

I agree , when driving the 1200 miles south for the winter I drive as though I'm in a mini-race always staying just out front of the pack or if I have no way through staying back far enough that no one can get to me.
It always amazes me that people will collect in packs on the interstate and the blocking starts, brake lights on and off , whataclusterf#$%.
From: I may be getting old but I refuse to grow up
It happens all the time whether I'm driving my Silverado 2500HD or my Sunfire. I almost got hit in my sunfire 4 times in the span of about 4 hours, the last time was a guy in a Dodge Ram pulling out of a resturant parking lot into the side of me. Mikssed by only 6"

Yep...when the situtation arises...we'll hang back too, usually not for long though
Yep, not even in the picture...Joanne getting her own scooter. I don't think I could enjoy myself trying to watch out for her Besides, she likes it right where she is...behind me.
You know, the idiots are not only on the land....just last weekend we were coming out of the Monterey Harbor with our Santana 22 when a 40 footer just pulled out, (without looking behind him)...needless to say, he took evasivie action when he saw me shooting vid!! Muddy

probably, but what would the police do?...... there's no accident or anything so i'm sure they could care less.....
i drive tractor trailer for a living, and this **** happens every day to me. the old people ,and the save the world crowd are the worst. they wonder why there are so many people killed . they are the main reason.but this is the u.s.a where you can kill yourself, and not be responsible.. rant off..
I ride a parallel twin 650 bike as well and people don't see you even when they see you. With the 76 vette at stoplights people with cars that are POS with lawnmower motors in them race away from the light to beat a "vette." I let them. One guy did that then gave me the finger and he didn't even know me! Something about these cars gets people's testosterone up...guys anyway.
I agree that a large part of it is being distracted, i.e. cell phones, i-pods, dvd players, etc, but from listening to people over the years, an attitude I've heard expressed more than once is "It's a (insert classic here), he doesn't want to hurt it, he'll stop or avoid me". To a large degree it's true, but that's not taking into consideration how well the person driving that car can drive. A lot of people out there have a much different way of thinking, or NOT thinking, when it come to the point.

Same Here. Remember from DRiver's Ed when I was 16 (forty years ago) to 'get the whole picture' when driving. Don't just look at what's in front of you and behind. Get a feel for the whole picture so you know when something's not right.

you're in a vette, that automatically means some nipple head just HAS to pass you. you can't imagine how many times some chuckle head in a civic with the fart can and a wing passes me in a 45 zone like he's john force or something. first of all, i know how fast my car is, i don't need to proove it to you. and second, if i wanted to be in front of you, i would be. and don't even get me started on the way people drive when i'm out on the harley.
