Default block casting number

I am getting ready to build a 388 for my 72 and I am looking at a 350 a guy near me has that I can get. It is a 4 bolt main block and the engine supposedly came out of an 82 Caprice. It has a quadrajet intake on it and the block casting number is 3970810, can anyone tell me what size valves are in this thing I don`t want to buy it if it has small valves but I don`t want to take the heads off it at his place.

You sure about that number? Might be 3970010. What's the information on the engine stamp pad.

what would it be if it were a zero Mike. the engine is lying on it`s side in his garage and is pretty nasty. I could have easily missed a number

If it's a 0010 block, it's the most common and longest lived casting number of any modern SBC. There's a bazillion of them around. I wouldn't count on this one being anything special. '82 and Caprice doesn't say high performance to me. I'm not even sure they has 350 cu in engines in them, maybe a 305.

Must be a 3970010. Used from 69-79 in cars, trucks and Corvettes.
You're going to have to get the numbers right in front of the right side head to tell anything else.

I will get it tomorrow, my main concern is the size of the valves. I pulled the pan off and it is a 4 bolt block but I don`t want to get it just for that.

get us those numbers but also need head casting numbers and dates and we might be able to tell you the valve sizes.. these will be of course educated guesses since who knows if the heads came with the block.. only way to know for sure is to pull the heads. are you sure it is a 4 bolt main?

Low perf truck engine. That explains the four bolt.

Doesn't matter size valves are in it. You can have it machined to a larger size valve if you like. I'd go with the 1.94 intake and 1.60 exhaust unless you'll be spending a bunch of time in the 6,000 rpm and up range. Then maybe I'd go with a 2.02 intake. But under most driving situations on the street you won;t be spending much time in that range.
All sorts of things you can do to help those heads before you install them.

I was thinking about that today I can go with small valve heads because of the small combustion chambers. I was thinking of around a 10 to 1 ratio and good gas for a street engine
