Default Too much Party last night..

So, last night I was sitting out in the shop with a few buddy's and one mentioned, Hey, didn't you consider painting your 79 YELLOW? You know you have 6 gallons of "Caterpillar" yellow out in the shop! I laughed it off. But, opening one can, I actually was thinking, I wonder what the difference is between that and automotive paint is. I know the stuff is durable as hell, being I repaint my equipment every so often, but, hmmmmm. looking at my Cat, it really has a rather nice gloss to it and it sits OUT 12 months a year! So, am I crazy for even thinking this or should I sit down and open up another Budweiser and forget the subject ever came up? (I really doubt it is the same quality as a good Dupont). Cool thought though. It just seems strange how the "Cat" yellow keeps shining and shining, yet the John Deere green oxidizes in a few years after sitting in extreme weather..
It's been a rough day... I just figured maybe a few of you needed a good laugh today as a Saturday pick me up..

No need to worry... It was the Budweiser doing the thinking...

Just thought I would share the crazy evening discussion.

I have wondered the same thing; painted equipment over the years with enamel with good results. Priced some automotive paint recently, and started thinking the same thing...

It would have been too much party if you woke up this morning with a yellow vette.

When you start having thoughts like that it's time to find a new hobby - one that doesn't involve beer!

Not sure of his screen name either, but there was a fellow here who painted his vette with rustoleum and a roller. I think the title was " $50 paint job." He posted some pics. a couple years later and the car still looked good.

It's single stage paint but just a different color. When we wanted a cheap single stage paint we would just ask for tractor paint. It was usually the paint manufactures bottom tier line of paint. But thats changed because people like Caterpillar started demanding better quality paint so they now have paint mixed especially to their specifications. Because you don't want the color fading on your dozer or your front end loader.

Lowbuck or Lowbucks as I recall. It turned out really well and lasted at least a year or two last time I heard.

I suppose you never know until you try. If your current paint job is terrible and you don't mind doing the extensive work to prep it properly, why not? One bit of advice though. If you ever sell it, don't advertise as "Caterpillar Yellow."
