Default weird cooling question

just put the motor back in, and was looking at the rad. shroud. Was thinking about putting a piece of polished alum between the bottom of the radiator and the cross member, and leaving the shroud off. I have run it at 2500 rpm for 45 min. in the garage and it stayed at 190 with no alum or shroud. Any thoughts or has anyone else tried this?

When you get on the road and have the tranny adding heat and the engine pulling a load not just rpm you're going to be a lot hotter. If your a/c is still working that will add more heat. Everything takes the path of least resistance. That shroud forces all the incoming air to go through the radiator instead of around it. When it all goes through it cools a lot better. I don't know about temperatures up there but down here in Texas we struggle to keep them cool with everything installed and working. Lots of us are looking for extra cooling. The other thing that shroud does is keep your hands out of the fan. It hurts like hell when you hit that moving fan. Put the polished aluminum on top of the shround and it will still look good.

Hi 76,
I guess you need to remember that Chevrolet was out to make money. If the shroud wasn't needed I don't think it would have been there.
They'd drop it even if it cost them just $5.

Alan

Is that why they left it off the L88s ?

I had mine off for a couple of weeks this fall. While you are driving normal temperature. However come to a light or get stuck in stop and go traffic and you will see the temperature climb. Can't imagine in the summer time.
