74 LS4 PS Pump ???
I will look in my shop manual to double check but does anyone know???
74 LS4 / No factory AC
My PS pump is currently only "powered" by a short belt from the alternator......Should it be from the crank / water pump? That is comparatively a very small drive pulley providing power to the pump.
I've had this car for about 5 years now and it was routed that way when I bought it.
I am wondering if this has slowed the pump rpm's so slow that it does not make the needed hydraulic pressure? I've replaced the pump and valve and it is still a "workout" to drive.
Could this be why my PS requires TWO Hands to drive???
...there was a Red/Black Vinyl 43K mile 1974 454 4spd roadster on eBay without A/C from Mershon's that I believe is the same exact way. Don't have link right now.
This is for the '73 LS4 but it should be the same for 74. Believe that yours would be the upper right one.
Edit: having issues with my web site and getting pic to display. So....Should have one belt around the crank, water pump, and PS pump. Then another from the PS Pump driving the alternator. Also a thrid from the water pump to the AIR pump.

You mean that there's a double pulley on the alternator?
No, Mike. The 'single belt' is actually powering the alternator from the P/S pump. His system should have a P/S pump with a double pulley and the main power coming into that system is via the back pulley running from the crank/water pump/P/S pump.

I have now....inspected, cleaned and greased every joint in the steering system....replaced the pump....corrected the improper belt routing....replaced the control valve.
It still takes two arms to turn and while I'm not The Hulk, I'm not a weakling.
The only thing I have yet to replace is the hydraulic cylinder.
I am ordering a rebuilt one tomorrow.... I will let you know if that fixes it.
I thought the cylinder would either "work or not",maybe it's just WEAK!
Mayberg is right Buddy, you still have aproblem somewhere, my 454 w/PS turns very easy. With a couple fingers if I wanted too. I had my original steering pump rebuilt at BEARS,in PA about 15years ago and just recently restored the valve the pivot was worn. Car never has steered better.
I have the complete original belt system with all the bells and whistles AC, AIR smog system, idle pulley , PS all the correct original GM pulleys still on my car since new...yep its tight fit . It works fine. I use the Quantium, belts , for no reason, other than I kNOW they are the correct lenght and quality and when its all reassembled it works FIRST TIME and adjusts up correctly.
BTW...... I put new pair of coil springs under the front end . MAde a world of difference in handling.

Check for correct hose routing. As stated, something could be backwards. If not, my guess is, the steering box is seized up.
Also, what's the tire pressure in you tires? It can make some difference.
Lastly, raise the front of the car on jack stands,..crawl under it and watch the steering linkage for binding or interference while a helper turns the steering wheel back and forth.
