I'm going to replace the dead clock in my 78. I'm not sure what the difference is between the two, which one is easiest to install (if it matters). To be honest I don't even care if I have a clock but since I have the bezel out I don't want to put it back in without a working clock or gauge of some sort. Do you guys/girls have any suggestions? From Willcox either quartz or electric is the same price.
My digital clock will be in the radio which goes in shortly...the old clock will sit in the bezel and look clocky. I'd pick the quartz though was it me.
the quartz clock will be more dependable in the long run (read here keep working much longer, lol). the OEM mechanical clock won't hold up as long. other than that, the difference is that the second hand on the quartz clock will sweep around the dial, the original clock will actually "tick" second by second around the dial.
If you just want accurate time and good durability, go quartz. If you want the original 'second hand jumps every 1/2 second' and the 'electric rewind every 2 minutes', poorly kept time, and low reliability (but same as original), go stock replacement.
Somthing about the old original clock that I like. Just like the chrome mirrors instead of the sports. If you have an updated radio, the radio should have the time. So why not stick with the original?
I went the opposite of what most would do...I took out a quartz clock and replaced it with an electric that had a NOS movement. For the amount of time the car gets driven (and I disconnect the battery whenever its parked) I think it should last a while....and it's correct twice a day.
