What is the difference between White Lithium Spray vs applied

I am working on my corvette door latching mechanism and have removed it so I could clean it really well. When researching here on the forum, people say to apply it instead of spray it in. Why is that?

So if the locking mechanism is removed from the car then there probably is not going to be an issue.

James not a issue its all inside at least I never had a problem. Sometimes if it gets on glass and sits it does get very hard to remove.
