if i put the key in and try to lock the door it provides a "springy" resistance. Which wont let me lock the door, same for turning the **** on the inside. when i turn the **** it just goes back to center due to the "springy" resistance.
Interesting.. Mine does the same thing.. If I persist it will stay locked... But since the tops never go on and the keys are always in the car,not the ignition,it hasn't been a problem... I have put the tops on if leaving it overnight outside but figure it will be OK...
Pull the door panel off and see what's going on inside. After all these years, the grease is dirty, and almost like wax now.
Remove and clean all the connections to the push rods, lock mechanism where the **** mounts etc...
Re-lube everything and it should all be easy & smooth as silk.
I had the same issue on the left door as you. I did this and now it's like new. Also make sure nothing is bent out of alignment and rubbing the door or interior panel.
Also a good time to clean and re-lube the window tracks, and the door latch mechanism as well.

I know this might sound odd, but make sure that the OUTSIDE door handle is flush with the body of the car. If it isn't flush and it's halfway/partway up, then it will not unlock, nor will it open with the handle from the inside!
My car does this, and anytime I've dropped it off anywhere, I always get a call.
So the I can now lock the door from the inside and out
But I can NOT unlock it from the outside so I guess the problem is now within my key lock thing?
