Default another rebuild

hi i have a 71 project. need to know the squence of events. the frame is completely stripped, the front end off, rear section of body stripped, motor blew up, trans gone. what do i do first, put body back on frame and assemble front end back together, build frame then put body back,do i blast body then put together,do i do frame rebuild put body back together then paint inside engine compartment,or do frame complete rebuild, set body on frame do fiberglass work lift body off and do comeplete paint then install body. i guess i need somebody or told where to look for the correct procedure on how to get it back on the street. i know it will take time but i dont want to waste time doing it in the wrong order. i want rack and pinion and new motor and trans. do i spend the money and do them now or build the car and put the money toward assemble and spend the money on mods later. i need guidance. thanks russ

My process is as follows.
1) I have totally disassembled the car. I left the drive train in place.

2) I will trailer the car to Stan's shop Nov. 6, 2010. Stan and his crew will do all their base measurements and remove the body from the frame.

3)I will return to bring the frame home and disassemble. I will be sending the frame for powder coating.

4) I will return to Stans shop and assist in stripping the body. Stan and crew will actually do all the body work to include gapping all the panels and when ready gel-coat the whole car.

5) In the meantime I will be restoring the frame and drive train.

6) I hope to send the engine out for the machine work and assemble myself.

Well these are my plans right now but we all know how things change. I have set no time table for completion. I am doing this out of pocket as most hobbies are done and it will take some time. I have documented every step of disassembly with a digital camera and notes. I will post pictures when we really start getting into it. Good luck with your project and hope to stay in touch here more for support so I keep up momentum.

Start with a bare frame. Blast it and coat or paint, then start rebuilding the suspension to your liking. Then brake and fuel lines. Then steering system. Then brake system. Then wheels so it rolls. Then engine/trans. Then cooling system. Then body repair off frame. Then your call to paint the body off the frame or wait until it's on. Then reassemble body. Then wire it and finish the plumbing. Then interior. Then have a beverage and stare at it for awhile taking it all in. Then drive it hopefully every day.

The exact order of reassembly might change a bit, but the above sequence is pretty close. Have fun and enjoy the ride!

more or less as markids recommended. build a roller first, then set the motor and trans. repair and paint the underside of body(remove and repaint all the metal brackets and mounting plates) and paint the engine compartment. drop the body, connect radiator, brake and fuel lines, test engine (connect oil pressure gauge-see one of my posts and have fire extinguisher ready), repair glass, and prepare for paint. then sand, sand and sand some more!

Hi,
In my case I first separated the body and frame. I restored all the running gear completely. Only the body went to the painter. The majority of the body work was done and then the body was put back on the chassis after wrapping the chassis to protect it. The door and hood gaps were set and then the body was painted. The car came home at that point and I reassembled it.
Here are a few pictures that show a bit of the sequence I used.
Regards,
Alan

every time i see a pic of your car, i'm amazed. if my cars looked that nice, i'd be afraid to even take the cover off, let alone drive it!
