Default Side pipes for 72

Is there any one out there using a set of the side pipe factory covers with normal type headers or are the headers to far back to hook up to side pipes. For my 72 350 I would like to use the reproduction factory side pipes but I have already purchased a set of headman headers. Pictures of your hookups would be great as I have never had a car with side pipes.
Thanks

Depending where the collector wind up I would think a "S" pipe could be made so the factory side pipe covers could be used.

Just to be clear, there weren't any factory side pipes in 1972. Are you talking about using the ones from 1969?

Hi,

I have the same question.

I have a 69' and will add the original Sidepipes. Can I only install them with the original EXHAUST MANIFOLD or are there better (Performance) Headers available , not needing modifications to fit ?

Thanks

Frank

I bought the Sanderson CC1HO to put between my ZZ4 and factory style side pipes from Sweet Thunder. Works well!

I understand that 72 vettes did not have side pipes from the factory that only the 69 vettes did. It was probably confusing when I said factory side pipes however I am referring to the 69 factory covers and using them on my 72. What I am wondering is does it hurt the exhaust system if they connection pipe between a header and side pipe has to go back forward some. I can not be the only person that ever wanted to use a standard header can I? Raphiki what is a CC1HO and what type of manifolds are you using on the ZZ4? Any pics available to look at and your factory type covers, where did you get them.

Hi Frank,
You could probably install the McJacks headers. They are suppose to be a direct replacement for factory manifolds.

I looked at the McJacks and they were out of my budget. The Sandersons I got are for the ZZ4 with the D port heads. They are block huggers and left lots of clearance which was a concern since I also have R&P steering. I got the original pipes and covers off fleabay but replaced the pipes last summer with the Sweet Tunder pipes. This is how it looks now:

Jim, Awesome looking car!! I checked out your other pics. You are sporting exactly what I am looking for and it looks great on yours. I hope you dont mind a few more questions, first I am assuming your CC1HO is a set of shorty headers? I googled them but no pics on any of the sites I found. where did you purchase your sweet thunder pipes and did they go from the header to the pipe?
Next question is about your covers, are they the original factory covers or are they the fiberglass replicas. If they are fiber glass covers did you have them painted. The original ones are out of my budget! I would like to see a pair of the fiberglass ones to see how well the look! In either case yours are really good looking on your car. Thanks for your time!

Thanks! It's been a ride. Literally and figuratively. The headers are block huggers so they sit closer to the block than the stock manifolds. I ordered the pipes as mufflers only and had a local shop fab the connecting pipes. They had to do some stretching since the collectors are 3" and the muffler inlet is 2 1/2", but all worked.

The covers I bought off fleabay and are original '69's. Just have to wait for the right deal to come along. When I bought the car it had a set of aftermarket fiberglass covers that were painted silver. I painted them black and thought they looked better but still not like the original parts.

Hope this helps!

Jim

Jim, thanks for the information, There is a set of covers on fleebay now but it looks as though its just the center section and I want the whole thing front to back, actually I thought the factory ones were all one piece but not having first hand knowledge I dont know enough. I'll keep my eyes open for a set.
Thanks

Those are mine, and they are just the center sections.

I have Headman Headers that are run to my sidepipes. They are the Elite headers and run out to the sides, not the back. This way you can use sidepipes without any bends. My sidepipes are aftermarket, Patriot sidepipes (I love them!). When I get my car back, I'll get pictures. My car was used as a "prototype"/pilot by the Corvette shop I use to make the best mounting method for the sidepipes, and it is a custom mount similar to the '69 sidepipes.

Hi Rodney,
Just a mention that the original 69 type covers were made up of 3 castings for each side AND also a long fiberglass insulator that the castings mounted to. The castings can't be used without the insulators. Bear this in mind when you price castings. The insulators are available in reproduction from Paragon too.
Regards,
Alan

Will, I would like to see some pics once you get it back. Alan, thanks for the heads up. I am keeping my eyes open for a set of the 69 type, but may go with something else if I see something that appeals to me.

For the covers I used a set of Paragon repos, which are of excellent quality and headers made by Stahl that were designed for sidepipes, they were expensive and the driver's side needed a bit of rework that Stahl should have done but did not.

If I were going to do it over I would either use the factory 69 style with a good set of shorties (if it is street driven are you going to notice any dereference in performance?) or go with a complete set of Hookers (which of course give a different look).
