Hi folks,
My transmission has started slipping and doesn't want to do much of anything in reverse. It does get better after the car warms up. I'm thinking the trasmission may be toast.
I just relocated to VA and don't know anyone in the area. I'm thinking that I may be better off buying something like a TCI streetfighter from Summit and having it put in instead of having Bubba from AAMCO rebuild the one I have. What do you folks think?
Personally, I wouldn't have an issue with having a transmission shop rebuild my transmission. It's what they do. Sort of like having a muffler shop work on your exhaust system.
Although; when the transmission fails it is a good time to consider an upgrade.
I'm going to assume that you have already checked the fluid level and shift linkage, right? That is all you can check without tearing it down.
You can also smell the fluid to see if there is any burnt odor, which would indicate high operating temperatures due to slippage.

I've heard a lot of horror stories about transmission repair places over the years. I'm just thiknning I may be better off getting one from a manufacturer rather than have bubba tear into mine...

Have a good one,

A few years back, I had a 64 Impala convertible and purchased a 700R4 from Bow Ties Overdrive and was very very happy with their service and product.
Of course you could really change it up and dump in a row your own 5 or 6 speed!
I pulled mine on my '78 last year and had a rebuilder do it......best $500 I spent. It amazes me how much better and "torquier" it is. He showed me some of the O rings and they just cracked in half. He found a bad spring as well. The work wasn't as bad as I expected and he had it done in a week.
What is your budget and what type of driving do you intend to do?
If you intend to replace and you can afford it I would highly recommend a overdrive unit!
Thanks for the feedback guys. I think I've talked myself into a rebuild. I understand the "replace with an overdrive" comments. But it seems like every time I try to do something like that, stuff never fits right and it ends up morphing into something far beyond my original intents. If I start down the "I'll put in an overdrive" path I'll end up with a new engine, ac and steeroids. I've got ambitions of a 383 at some point. I may do the overdrive then.
