Default Help...Convertible Door Guide

So I'm in the middle of reassembly after paint and I'm looking for a piece of the door guide receiver assembly. There's a rubber pad between the metal circular pieces that the door guide rests in when the door is closed that I need to replace. The original rubber has deteroriated to black chalk. I can't find one or I don't know where to look.

Any advice? There's nothing wrong with the ones I have except for the rubber piece so I'd rather not spend $80-$90 bucks for new ones, so I'll make something if I need to.

Thanks,
dw

Hi dw,
I too see both parts of the guide, but no mention of any rubber part except for the seal on the lock pillar.
I don't know what it looks like... can you make your own?
Regards,
Alan

I have new seals for the lock pillar but have driven myself crazy looking for the other replacement rubber piece. I'm thinking I might try black silicone. Squirt some in there and then reassemble the brass piece. Allow it to cure good, trim off the excess silicone and it should provide plenty of cushion. What do you think?

Hi dw,
I'm thinking there must be quite a bit of pressure on the rubber part as you drive the car and the door wants to move slightly as the chassis flexes.
Obviously the rubber is there to prevent a squeak. So the rubber needs to be strong. The first thing I thought of was a piece of inner tube which is thin but very strong. But I'm just guessing since I'm not sure what the original looked like. Is there a way to hold it in place? Was it glued originally?
Sorry, I'm just not sure what we're talking about.
Regards,
Alan

Inner tube...good idea. The rubber appears to be affixed to the body of the guide assembly. I like the inner tube idea. Cut it to fit and use silicone or something to glue it in place. Thanks!!

Alan,

It's the door guide receiver assembly. The internal piece/sleeve appears to be brass.

http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb....Z5Z5Z50000050D

I replaced the lock pillar cushions last summer. The white substance is GM silicone emulsion. But my brass sleeves are pretty well gone. I don't need the ***'y, just the sleeves. But...no luck in finding JUST them.

I found the pieces I needed at https://www.paragoncorvette.com/. They make the part for many suppliers and I'd bet you can get what you need from them. The rubber cushions are $5 each...$10.95 shipping. They are the ONLY place I found them thanks to Corvette Central. I sent Corvette Central an inquiry and they forwarded me the info on Paragon who is their supplier for the part. Let me know what you find out.

Oh, and you'll have to call them. The rubber cushion I needed is not listed on their site. I bet yours won't be either.

dw

I thought the same thing but both of the brass inserts that I have are kind of floppy. Perhaps there should be a rubber or plastic insert in there?

Yes, there is a rubber cushion between the brass and body of the receiver. If yours is "floppy" the rubber needs replacing. See my post above.

Interesting. The closer I look at the Corvette Central pic the more I see that rubber insert!

*Edit* - I checked the Paragon catalogue. No rubber and brass sleeve; just the unit for $84.00. So this may require a call unless Paragon listens in here.

If push comes to shove I will order the $86.00 unit but it really does not make sense for a piece of rubber and brass. But what can you do?

That's bad news. I only thought one of the guide receivers needed to be replaced

Just noticed my passenger side had no rubber, and the brass guide pulled right out. I cut a piece of bike inner tube in a U for a trial, and I think it will work great. Thanks Alan!
