can anyone tell me if the DoT stamp appeared on 68 vette tires also did any 68s come with uniroyal red line tires any info would be GREATLY appreciated thx
Hi sc,
The info I'm looking at indicates that some very early 68 model year cars may have had tires without the DOT stamp.
I believe the Uniroyal tires were used in production along with Firestone and Goodyear.
Regards,
Alan
Red stripe tires were optional on the 68s and could have been Uniroyal, Firestone, or Goodyear.
You can get modern reproductions if you want the red stripes, but they will have DOT codes on them.
If you have red lines from 1968, use them only for show or judging purposes. You do not want to be traveling at highway speeds on forty year old bias-ply tires.

As I've posted previously on the topic, DOT/NHTSA began requiring date codes on tires circa 1972. Any older than that should have been pulled from service by the early '80's as a matter of safety, however correct one might wish to have every last detail. Tire failures can be very violent, and you don't have to be cruising down the highway (or even in motion) for an old one to just decide to let go. Should you, your wife or kid, or a judge happen to have their nose in the wrong place at the wrong time... Well, how much will scoring maximum points be worth then?
