Default Help identifying Chevy Big Block

Good day everyone, just picked up this Chevy Big Block at a local Mazda shop here in Japan. This beast cost me a six pack of Budweiser and thats it.

The shop owner said it is an early model 427, but thats all he knows. Said it runs, has good compression and no know issues. The casting number looks a little odd to me, looks double stamped?

The engine is complete from air filter to 4 speed tranny. I will be taking a shot of the cylinder head numbers later this evening. Would just like to know what it is and if it's worth saving.

Can anyone help identify this enging by the casting number?

Thanks,
Dan

A 6-pac of regular bud. Not sure why the Japanese men like the Bud so much, Japanese beer is so much better.

Doesn't look right to me either, has anyone else seen slanted numbers before?

Default Bbc i.d- 'il'

0424IL-April 24th 1966 427/390hp Manuel trans. First year of the 427, closed chamber heads, 2-bolt main, 2.06Int/1.72Ex. valve size. Oval port heads. Whats the head and block casting Numbers? 65 and 66 BB had the date castings half way between the front and back of the block next to the pan. The block casting # would be behind the drivers side head. The early blocks used a grooved cam and cam bearings, as oiling was a little differant than the 67 on.
Somebodys looking for that motor! ...Just not sure if that somebody's in Japan.

Post the block and head casting numbers.

Dave,
IO code = from what I can see...

1. regular Passenger car in 1966 4 barrel / air/ turbo hydro tranny
2, regular passenger car in 1967 same combo as above

3...1967 CORVETTE 3x2 barrel / high performance turbo hydro 400 tranny,.....

Only 3 references to a IO code...

The VIN derivative identifies it as the engine out of '68 Corvette S/N 17890 or 17899.

T0424IL = 427/390 with 4 speed built in Tonawanda on April 24th.

Nice find! Wonder if the car is still around?

Yep. Pad numbers are okay for a May built '68. Block casting number will help confirm the pad stamps.

I'm guessing #17890 was the car before it; this one was to be #17891. Worker forgot to change the gang tool and stamped 17890, realized the mistake, then hand stamped the 1 -- probably while he was changing the gang tool to 17892.

Yea, Mikes right. My Suffix code source was on the weak side. Did't show that the IL code used for 66-68 yrs. Just said 66, even though the Vin plainly said it was installed in a 68

Thats a great find

Slanted is ok, as long as they are all on the same baseline.......not one higher or lower then another as they were supposed to be stamped all together at once, NOT inividually.

Dates appear corect as my car is TO0401IM & my mine is almost exactly 2,000 units before yours for an april 1st build with a 4spd.
