I've thought about the time it takes to do things too. What's funny is I have incorporated some LEAN processes into my work on the car. Next thing I know I'll have KANBAN cards for things like motor oil.

During the restoration of my wife's 70 LT-1 roadster there were several jobs I contemplated being done by facotry workers where I wouldn't have wanted to be the person doing that task. @ quickly come ot mind, the installation of the driver's side dashboard/wiring, convertible soft top installation/alignment and anything having to do with the side windows.
We can console ourselves as saving a part of history never to be done again, the C1/2/3 Corvettes were hand fabricated automotive dream cars and this type of car will never be built in mass quantities again. Every fiberglass body of these cars is unique and was a time consuming process of assembly.
Now, I get to enjoy over 3 years of hard work on a weekly basis and while our C6Z06 is an AWESOME ride, most people don't notice it but, I get plenty of compliments on the 70 Vette. It only took time, money, blood, and sweat (no tears from me but, lots of cussing!)
I spend way too much time in the garage pondering what to do, how to do it and how much is it going to cost? Then I think about how much I am going to miss driving it while up on jack stands. Time for another beer.
