Default 78 Pace Car Questions

In the restoration process of my 78 pace car, I have 2 questions:

1-I have found that my spare tire is dry rotted: Where can I find a replacement for the Polyspare Goodyear (P195 80/D15)?

2-I wish to change the rear limited slip differential fluid: What type of gear oil/weight and additive should be used? Does anyone know the GM part numbers of these products and quanity needed?

Thanks everyone for your help:
Bill

1. Ebay http://motors.shop.ebay.com/__?_from...e+tire&_sacat=

noticed they are looking for $250

2. Since you asked for GM:

1 bottle http://www.ecklers.com/positraction-...-additive.html

2 bottles http://www.ecklers.com/differential-gear-lubricant.html

Posted the link so you can get the gm number. I checked with a dealer and they sell the posi for $8.44 a bottle. Your call.

those items are available from many suppliers besides ecklers. check with keen corvette parts (one of the forum's supporting vendors) or places like corvette central (another supporting vendor) or one of the many othe corvette parts and accessories places. check around, there are loads of them. personally i have had many bad purchasing experiences with ecklers and avoid them if at all possible. keen and corvette central have been great to deal with as have many others.

BTW unless you are trying to do an NCRS type restoration, be careful what you put in your spare carrier if you ever intend to use it. anything that old is certainly dry rotted and would be very unsafe.

Lucas 85-140 is what I went with after reading what some of the experts advise. And a bottle of GM posi additive available from GM dealers.

The tire could be tough. I don't believe that the OEM size is available any more. You may be able to find a regular use tire of similar dimension, or a current temporary spare of similar size. Me, I just make sure that my "Triple A" is paid up, and carry a can of Fix-A-Flat.

There is no need to buy the posi addative from a Corvette vendor, and pay freight to get it. You can get it through your local Chevy dealer.

I don't know if these are the current part numbers, but I show the posi addative as 1052358 for a 4 oz. bottle (4 oz. is all you'll need), and 1052271 for a 24 oz. bottle of rear gear lube (you need 4 bottles of these). You shouldn't really need the part numbers, as every GM parts department should have it on the shelf.

The GM number in post #2 is correct for the lube #89021671 and you can get both at the dealer if you want.

I used slightly less than 2 quarts when I changed fluid on my 78 <64 oz. so make sure have at least that available.

FWIW, I also used the 85-140 purchased at the local parts store.
