Default Question-Shocks for a 68

I need to replace the shocks on my 68 L71 4sp, 3.36 rear, no A/C or power anything almost all original vette. Does anyone know what came from the factory? Also, can some people chime in on recommendations for new shocks-type and manufacture.

Hi bs,
68 model cars had Delco Remy Pliacell shocks.
There were standard shocks and heavy duty shocks that were part of the F41 optional suspension package.
I'm sure other members will post suggestions for up-dated shocks.
Regards,
Alan

PS: There is a Delco replacement shock that looks quite a bit like the original when painted gray/blue as the originals were.

Thanks for the original shock info. Are they still available? I forgot to say that I just use my vette for crusing-no racing other than normal showing off from time to time.

That is exactly what I did. They are Delco, made in Mexico and painted black. Fronts are $35 each and rears are $38 each. Many of the parts houses sell them. Keep your originals........

I'm no expert but I read a lot that many like one of the two versions of Billstein shocks, both I believe stiffer than oem Delco shocks for the most part. It depended on what you wanted out of your car what you put on it. If you are racing it and need the least sway cornering and you don't care about ride comfort then put the stiffest you can find on it. The Billsteins are pretty expensive at about $80 a shock though those with them swear by them. Some others did as Alan suggested and were completely happy with Delcos. In my case I just chose to do something that others have also done, went with KYB twin tube xlg2 gas shocks. KYB also has a stiffer monotube shock but the reports on the KYB's I bought said they were slightly stiffer than the oem Delcos of stock suspension which were on my car of indeterminant age. When they were put on I can say that I am very happy with them. They should do well in April when I take the car on a road course for 100 minutes following a pacing car for the experience. So...the answer to "what shocks do you like" is: it depends on what you want out of your suspension. Some are adjustable as well which is another dimension. Lance

Hey Beefstick, I have a 68 with the exact powertrain you have. 435, 336 gears no ps or pb. and just this past summer replaced a set of very old delco shocks with the Bilstein HD shocks. Couldn't be happier ! A little pricey but worth the money as far as I'm concerned. A very nice handling and riding shock. The Bilstein Sport shocks are stiffer and not what I wanted. Great looking car you have too! KO68

They weren't the originals but some adjustable Delcos. Probably replaced in the early 70s. Once off the car they barely moved so needed replacing badly. While under the car decided to change all the original U-joints too. I did keep those.

Delco if you want a stock look. KYB if you want to upgrade.

ALAN: Curious what you suggest for the Blue / Gray paint ?
