Default Melted battery Terminals??

So I had to jump the car when I picked it up from the paint shop. Its winter in Chicago, the motor is high compression, and the starter should really be replaced, needless to say it took about twenty minutes of cranking to get it running. When I finally get it running the negative cable on the battery disconnected. Why?? because the terminal melted and the bolt fell out. When I got home I put a battery in with top posts, and the negative post on the battery started melting again when I jumped it. Since then I can't get a battery to hold a charge in the car for more then a day. I replaced the negative grounding cable and have yet to play with the car. Anyone know what might be going on here. Two batteries have melted!?

Do a continuity test on your battery to starter cable to ground with both ends disconnected.
Could also be your starter shorting internally when kicked in, if the melting is only when the starter is used.
You should blow fuses and links past the solenoid with enough amperage to melt a battery terminal.
