Can someone tell me what the vacuum can above the pass side valve cover and on the fire wall is for? I know, dumb question...

Thanks,

No such thing as a dumb question, but in the future it would help, if you told us what year car you have. The vacumn can on the firewall is to hold vacumn that operates the pop up door that hides the windshield wipers, I believe its called a 'windshield wiper door actuator' and they were yellow zinc dichromate in finish and had either a straight or curved nipple.
Hope this helped some
Regards
Roy

Pics would be nice. Is it rectangular? If it is, my guess is some kind of shaker for the alarm.

Interesting. I was told the wipers work fine. How can this be? It's a possible project driver...

Pic didn't work.
As Roy stated, it's not a vacuum can. The Vacuum can is next to the brake master cylinder under the fender, mounted to the inner fender wheel well.

Interesting. So this was a can for the alarm? something that when shook or moved, set off an alarm? Was this standard?

Pic not coming up at the moment, but if you have a wiper door with the shorter hood on a 68-72, the wipers may work fine, but they shouldnt come on untill they get the signal from the door being in the open position.

Hi d,
The wiper door actuator is missing in your picture so the wiper door can't open or close unless the system has been modified. The car still has the wiper grill and door.
I don't see the can you're asking about in the picture.
Regards,
Alan

Here's a picture of the actuator for a 71. I believe the 69 had one shaped like a coffee can or this one which is shaped like two pie pans.

Not to mention that there's not even a wiper motor in the photo.

Hi Fred,
You're right!!!
This photo must have been taken while the car was being reassembled.

For opening the wiper door. Yours is missing in the pic, along with the wiper motor.

FWIW: 69s used two different actuators; early cars used the cylindrical coffee can type like the 68s; later cars used the double pie pan type as seen in Alan's pic. Based on the bracket on the cowl, it looks like your '69 had the coffee can type.

If this is your car, there is no wiper motor installed. It mounts on the firewall behind the distributor where you see the empty round opening.

I don't see how your wipers could work without a wiper motor.

Here's a 69 BB. You can see the gold colored "coffee can" style actuator and the wiper motor behind the distributor shielding.

Hi Alan,
Thanks! It's in the blood you know!
The 70 is in the shop having the rear trailing arms, bearings etc... and diff rebuilt. Then new front springs, than a vintage AC system installed. The buyer lives in Atlanta. I should have some new update pics to post soon.
I'll miss it when it's gone, but I'll still be around here.
