so lately I have been finding a little bit of moisture under the passenger side floor matt, i figured it was just from all the rain and people getting in and out of the car. Well this evening I got in and noticed a puddle of liquid in the passenger floorboard with a greenish tint to it. It was pretty soaked, i picked up the carpet and sopped up most of it.fire There also seemed to be greenish fluid at the bottom edge of the black vent going through the fire wall. Is that the heater coil? Is it leaking coolant? What am I looking at?
yes, sounds like the heater core. I've changed them on a C2, never a C3 so I'm sure someone will have to 'chime' in. Check the coolent level. Also, careful where you 'squeeze' out the stuff in the carpet/mat. Coolent is very deadly to animals (dogs/cats/etc..)
And take the time to remove the carpet. Hang it over a fence or something and thoroughly flush it out with water.
You'll never get the grimey feel out of it otherwise, plus the anti freeze will discolor it over time.
yes A/C car, all coolant collected is in towels which are washed and the waste water is goes into my septic so its not the best way but no animals will get it. Unfortunately the base carpet for the interior is also soaked, that whole giant one piece.
1) do i need to completely replace the heater core? I am unfamiliar with it
2) any ideas how to clean and dry the carpet while it remains in the car? I have it lifted up so the insulation can breathe also but i am unable to take it out.

The only other option is looping the heater hoses if you don't need the heat. I did this with an old jeep I had. It's not the right way to do it, but it isn't Bubba'd either.
It's funny (well not really ha ha funny) how these cars were engineered to dump engine coolant on the passenger side carpet when the heater core fails, and dump engine oil all over the interior when the oil pressure guage fails. Maybe they should design adult diapers for the cars as they age.... hmmm my bigblock used to pee on the floor when she got hot.

Re your (1), yes it is a single unit and must be replaced as such.
And it is a HUGE PITA to change it. If you're not comfortable with turning wrenches, get someone else to do it.
What makes it difficult? jw...lack of space? It seems I need to pull that black duct that goes into the firewall and the coil should be right there? Thanks for all the help people, where is a good place to get a new core? is it a regular gm part that discount would have or should i do an eckler order?

It's not that easy. Your dash will be different than mine but basically you have to get the heater box out of the car from the passenger side interior. The job is tedious but doable. Just remember how the ductwork fits together or take pics as you go along.
All the major vendors have the core but most units are Chinese these days. Pressure test the core before installation.
