Default Really dumb question

So I bought this compass for the Vette. It was 2 bucks and it is one of those liquid filled *****. So I mount it and it points North and I go east west south and it always shows me North.

I want a cheap compass that shows me which way I am traveling not just point north all the time. Am I missing something here. I never gave this much thought, just started typing.

I don't want a GPS or anything like that I have one. I just want something that displays which way I am going like my newer car. It's got a temp gauge and displays which way the car is traveling.

Do you live at the south pole? If not, check for steel near the compass, which may be giving a false reading. If that is not the problem, get another compass.

yeah i had one of those once....I think it was made to mount on the windshield, but I stuck its suction-cup to the metal dash of the International SSII Scout I had..and the pointer always pointed at the dash...I did stick it to the window, but it kept popping off when hitting any bump at all...so I pulled the suction cup off and attached it to the zipper on my jacket, so then I could find north even without my truck(as long as it wasn't too hot to not have my jacket on)

tho I have to say, an ironic problem for a car made out of fiberglass

I have it hanging from my rear view mirror about 2-3 inches down, was going south and the stupid thing said I was going north, when I think about it, it does make sense. I take it off and move it around facing any direction and it points to the north like it's supposed to.

I want something that I can mount and look at and it will show me I am going east, or west or whichever direction I am going.

Was that one of the ones from Cdn Tire as I had one a few yrs. ago that did the same thing. My wife picked another one up last summer and it works but just seems **** backwards. I usually just use a gps unit with the vette as we head down so many back roads it's easy to get lost.

OK, I'm confused. You say it ALWAYS points north? Isn't that where a compass is supposed to point?

If you know which way is north, then you should be able to determine which direction you're heading.

If it's pointing behind the car, then you're heading south. To the left or right, you're heading east or west.

If a compass is too close to the magnetic fields (Wires) in the car you will never get an accurate reading!

if you already know which direction you were going with the compass always facing north how come you need a compass?

I like gadgets...but I have never seen a cheap compass really work right in any car..we all know why...it's no surprise..while old school is cheap and cool...if you look in the section of a good parts store they sell a small like thumbnail size digital compass that sticks to the mirror or where ever they work pretty good....
