You need an aftermarket speedo like this one from Corvette Clinic. Have one in my '78, but don't know if their still available. IMHO the graphics on the ones I've seen of late aren't quite as good, so I'd be picky if there's any choice left among them.

Does the speedo gear in the trans need to be changed as well?

Call John, he can reface and calibrate your speedo. Did mine and did a great job...

Guess that depends on what you call high MPH. He put mine to 140 MPH. He used to do the 165 but said those are very cluttered with the numbers so close, and there was a calibration issue too. Since my car is a street car, I thought if I'm spending any time around 140, I'm probably in trouble anyway, and knowing about the additoinal 25MPH the 165 would show, isn't gonna help!!!

I need to get this done also and have seen other people also mention

Has anyone had experience with either one of these companies and is it $200 just for the speedometer refacing/recalibration?

The easiest and cheapest way is to go to a swap meet and pick up a 78-79 speedo. I believe the 85 MPH ones were phased in for the 1980 and later models during the 1979 calendar production run.
I had a 1980 way back when and felt the same way- even though its illegal to go 85+, it looked bad. I was at Bloomington and easily found a '78--79 speedo and swapped it out for very little cost.
