I am restoring a 1980 corvette and have pulled all carpeting, sound deading material and am down to metal. Looking for suggestions from this group on what should be used to "reseal" the metal before I recarpet the interior of the vehicle. It appears that there was rust inhibitor (tar) sprayed at some point.
Important to add that on the drivers side there is a little surface rust. I assume I should wire brush this off, vacumm out and then spray something down before I carpet?
Grind off the rust and vacuum it well. Hit it with rustoleum primer and then get some undercoating paint (3M or other brand). then put down your underlayment/insulation (reflectix from Home Depot works great) and then your carpet.

This is what I plan to do for my 69. Even though I don't have metal floors there is some metal throughout the interior that I plan on cleaning up.
And the reflectix will hopefully be a nice addition. About $50 gets you a roll and reflective tape.
I wasn't worried about sound deadening as I ride with the t-tops off 100% of the time and my stereo and exhaust as loud as I can stand.
But it gets hot without air conditioning....
so far what i started. it's on hold till i finish the body off...
It'll be under the carpet. Probably not going to cook weinies in the storage compartment.
And, you really don't need heat insulation in the storage compartment. Lots of airflow and distance between exhaust system and that area. Heat insulation is needed on firewall, over the entire tranny tunnel [under all hardware], floorpan, and the bulkhead behind the seats. Reflectix works well for heat insulation. Sound deadeners will delay the heat getting into the cockpit, but with a little time, it will be just as hot as without it.

particularly the relectix part, lol. works great and is easy to work with. in addition it is very cost effective.
Clean it up good then reseal it. Got to be sure that you get all the rust out of it before you seal it otherwise you are wasting your time. I did mine almost 2 years ago and still haven't got the flooring back in, the cars been in the garage and outside with no signs of rust coming back. They make some spray cans that are paint and a rust inhibitor that are suppose to work real well. I just sprayed primer and some rustoleum and it's been doing just fine.
Clean the floor up real good, use rustoleum rust performer, prime it and then paint. I used ducting insulation for my floors, doors and storage compartment. It is 12 inches wide, 15 feet long and costs 16 bucks a roll. It is 1/8 inch think and is used for metal ducting. Find it at home depot. Takes 4 rolls to do the floor, tranny tunnel, and doors and storage compartment. just like hush mat. Just did mine last weekend end it it keeps the heat out and noise.

At the factory. GM sprayed undercoating sound deadener on both sides of the floor pan. The AIM has three or four diagrams showing the prep for spraying, areas to be left clean, plugs, etc.
