Default Delaminate T-Tops

I've taken everything off my T-Tops. As I moved them around, it sounded like they were full of rust. I'm going to try to use a heat gun to delaminate the frames from the tops.

Anyone have any ideas what to use to laminate them back together?

Thanks

Russ

Are you sure it's rust. Is there visible rust anywhere? Mine do the same thing. I think it's weather stripping plastic pins broken off when the WS was replaced a long time ago.

Not sure what it is.

Weatherstripping has never been replaced. The screws that hold the molding on was rusted, the cage nuts that hold the alignment pins were rusted. All steel parts are rusted, not alot but more than surface rust.

Was just assuming.

Wait until you get more opinions before you start delaminating them. May not be necessary, and a lot of work to put them back together.

I have something lose rattling around in my T-Tops and didn't have any idea what it could be. I'm afraid to investigate and open a can of worms and spend more time, money and energy on something that presently is low on my to-do list. I'm curious to know what you discover.

Hi,
It's possible to drill a 1/2" hole in a corner of the inner fiberglass frame which allows you to shake what ever it is out. I had to do this when I replaced the weather-strip as Glen noted.
This will allow you to see what's in there making the noise; and then you can decide what you need to do.
Regards,
Alan

Alan,

Which corner are you talking about? I was thinking about the same thing while taking them apart. Thought I could do it where the weatherstripping would hide the hole.

Hi Russ,
On my 71 tops there was a flat area about 1 1/2" square in the front/center corner. As I said, I drilled a 1/2" hole. It is hidden by the trim panel, so I didn't even fill it. I just put a piece of duct tape over it.
Good Luck with your rattle!
Regards,
Alan

Alan,

I've seen pictures of your car and there is no way you have duct tape anywhere on your car!!!!!!!

Thanks for the tip.

One could also get the correct size plastic plug at Lowes/Home Depot etc to cover up the drilled hole. It has been a couple years back but I did the same thing on a 74 I had. I replaced the weatherstip and in the process a few of the plastic push in clips broker off inside and ratled around everytime I moved the t tops. I drilled a hole ,shook out the pieces and then covered with a plug.
