Default Full right rudder

My '74 wants to go right. If I center the steering wheel (or go full left) and let go, it turns itself to the right limit. Not too bad until you're motoring down the road (at the posted speed limit) and relax your grip on the wheel. Does it moving or standing still. I haven't torn into it yet but thought someone here could point me in the right direction. I used to have a horse that had the same problem.

Assuming that you have power steering, try the procedure for centering the system on corvettefaq. If manual steering or the centering procedure doesn't work, you probably need a wheel alignment.

Full right rudder; give it full left aileron. Should slip straight down the road.

Seriously, do an online search for adjusting the power steering control valve. I've never had it happen with my cars but I have read something recently that sounded the exact same way you are describing. After the adjustment was made in the article I read, all was well again.

Good luck

Terry

It's been a long time since I did mine. It seems like the adjustment screw is kinda fiddly. Go slow and be careful.

Yep, it's power steering. I'll start with the control valve. Thanks!

pull your power steering belt and then take it for a drive to try to reproduce the problem, this will tell you what to troubleshoot next.

If you haven't changed the control valve recently, your problem is likely a failure of that control valve. Making an adjustment to the "balance" nut [at the outer end of that control valve, under the little stainless steel cover] might help you for a bit, but the signal valve inside the control valve is likely worn or hanging up and it will only get worse.

Time for a rebuild or replacement of the control valve. And, if the hoses are all pretty old, it would be a good time to replace those, too. If you decide to DIY, ask for some tips on doing that job before you dig into it. Not difficult, but some 'tricky' areas that you need to know about.

Well, after putting it off forever I tried adjusting the balance nut on the control valve. It took longer to find the right socket than to adjust the valve! I turned it about 1/2 turn, and no more problem! I've got some leaks to sort out, and will probably rebuild or replace the valve next winter if the problem creeps back. Thanks for the advice.
