Default window crank spacer install

I'm trying to install new window cranks and spacers on my '70 after installing my new door panels and I can't seem to figure out how the spacers go on. The AIM shows the metal tabs on the back of the spacer being bent outward with a 90 degree bend half down the tab. Is that correct? Do I even bend the tabs out at all? Thanks for any help anyone has on this.

Maybe you should have put the spacers on the door panel first, then bend the retainer tabs from the back? Give it a try.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking, but taking this panel off for the fourth time doesn't sound too appealing at the moment. Even if I do get the spacer on the panel the crank won't seat on the crank arm all the way. Of course these are aftermarket door panels that I'm installing. Very frustrating.....

They go on first before you put the panel back on.

That's what I was afraid of. Hopefully I can get the window crank to seat on the stud afterwards. Thanks for the help.
