So I have a '72 convertible and am tryin to figure out how to install the carpet in the rear compartment. Havin trouble. Does anyone have good photos of their carpet installation? Can't seem to figure out how the carpet is supposed to fit at the astro vents and how the carpet is supposed to fit around the deck lid springs and wheel wells.
Also, I'm thinking about not using the rubber carpet backing plugs. Are they really necessary?
article from super chevy magazine showing a interior resto of a 1972 coupe with some pictures, not exactly what you are doing but maybe some of the pictures of the carpet replacement might help. http://www.superchevy.com/technical/...ior/index.html
Good Luck Regards

The problem I'm having is the carpet piece with the finished edge (the piece that goes on the rear where the light is) go the top edge of the astro ventilation vents. Sorry I don't have a photo, but surely it is not meant to be trimmed since it's finished all the way across. I noticed yours is below the vents and still fits. I can't seem to figure it out.

Match the finished edge at the astrovent. DON'T trim the finished edge. Use the plugs. Glue as necessary. TRIM where the carpet meets the 3-door center compartment. You are thinking backwards.
Thanks again guys for the photos, comments and advice. I finally took a photo to illustrate my problem.
The carpet is just laying in place at the moment. As you see, the top of the carpet is pretty much even with the top edge of the astro vent. The carpet seems to fit in this placement. The bottom of the carpet where it steps up and the finished edge over wheel well area fits perfectly. If I adjust the carpet to where the top edge of the carpet is below the astro vent, then the lower portion doesn't fit.
What am I missing? As pictured, it appears that this is the only way the carpet will fit properly. I'm just about ready to leave it like it lays with the top of the carpet placed loosly (unattached/glued) over the vents. Seems it would work just fine and the flaps concealing the deck lid hinge area would cover properly.
Thanks for your patience with me and thanks for any help you might be able to offer.
Oh, as you see the carpet is faded in spots. It's brand new, but I bought it years ago and it's been in storage. I'll dye the faded areas after I install it.
Hi dd,
I'm unfamiliar with convertible carpet!!!
But, looking at your picture makes me think your carpet could work on a car with a/c which wouldn't have the astro-vents. A non a/c car would need to have a different carpet that didn't come as far up the bulkhead.
This picture of the original carpet in my 71 coupe would seem to work in your car too.
The NCRS Tech Info Manual shows the convertible carpet ending below the astro-vents.
???

Alan
Thanks Alan! I think you must be right. I knew there had to be something wrong with that piece of carpet. I think I'll just install it with the top portion loosely over the vents. It's easily corrected down the road if I choose to.
Thanks!

Hi dd,
The interesting thing is the 'dip' at each end of the top most edge of the original carpet doesn't make sense on the coupe, but is obviously needed to clear the hinges on a convertible.
On the coupe the top edge needs to be low to clear the mounting brackets for the rear window storage tray.
The reproduction carpet is pretty far off in each case for either version of car.
I guess if people shouted to vendors more things might fit better. Manufacturers want to make one version and say it fits many cars.

Alan
