Default Anti Car Jack System

Upon doing some ressearch on SPAL fans (since I ordered a radiator/fan combo from Dewitts), I found this on the SPAL website.

http://www.spalusa.com/store/main.as...oryBody&c=VSAN

Anyone ever install the SPAL ACJ 1000 Anti-Carjack System? I'm just wondering how well it works. I ordered one, but I haven't had a chance to install it yet. The price was right ($20 including shipping).

Not being facetious here, but systems such as vetteguy75's would far more likely stop the incident from occuring in the first place. I mean, will you really care if they take the car or not if you're face down in a pool... Still, for the price it looks good. Either way, check six.

I was heald up once by a group of theives. They pinned me down in a major city and stole my crap that I had on me. I used to think that I'd blow someone away if I had a gun. It sounds "cool" and I'd just whip out my gun, blow them away like Bruce Willis. Guess what, when it actually happens, it's usually a suprise attack. Will you really be able to reach under the seat and in a smooth motion and start shooting ...or would you want to? The intruders could be in very close quarters, not far away where you have time to assess the situation. Everything happens SO fast you don't get a chance to get the gun out and go to work. Furthermore, you'd better be ready to kill (and potentially go to jail) or die, right there on the spot deciding within a fraction of a second what you are going to do. And if there are multiple attackers, like in my case, are you really going to be able to cut them all down 1-2-3 when they are in your face? I'm sure you think you will, but you better be ready for that situation. Chances are very high you wouldn't be ready for them and the would-be theives would either have a gun, or manage to take yours away, get ratcheted up and use it on you. Better to get an insurance check than lose your life or sit in jail for 20 years.

I ran my incident through my head a hundred times and I'm confident if I'd had a gun on me that day I'd probably have gotten killed. As it happened, I lost about $50 and a couple books and a bunch of pride. That incident really opened my eyes up. Hopefully you'll never be in that situation.

I have the shotgun for home protection.

Mossberg Special Purpose shotguns provide modern, state of the art design for the most serious and potentially prolonged defense situations. A full range of popular models are offered in your choice of 18 1/2" and 20" barrel lengths. Choose from their durable finish options including traditional blued, or rugged non-glare Parkerized models.

SPECIFICATIONS: Gauge: 12GA ................ Chamber: 2 3/4" ....................... Action: Pump

Shell Capacity: 6 shot (5+1)

Not sure of the pistol in the picture (belongs to a friend of mine). But I carry a Glock 20 (45 ACP) in the Vette and on me, I carry a Taurus Millennium PT111 (9mm) 15 shot clip. I'm not paranoid, but when it comes to guns...."I'd rather HAVE IT and NOT NEED IT than NEED IT and NOT HAVE IT!!!!"

You know, this is the hard cold truth here. A similar scenario happened to a friend of mine - who always carries a hand gun. In his case, they only stole his gun, car, computer, cash, roughed him up and left him tied up in a hotel room. He had the gun in his hand when he was jumped. Absolutely no time to react and he was on the ground (without his gun) in a millisecond. He was lucky that they did not use the gun on him.

As far as the carjack kit, you can't really buy a decent key chain for $10, not sure I would rely too heavily on that thing working very well. I envision it preventing you from using your own car when it malfunctions. Interesting concept, just not sure it will deliver for $10. Let us know how it turns out.

Default Apologies for the sidebar...

I know the OP didn't intend on opening a debate on this very troublesome delima, but as no two circumstances are the same, with all due respect to Mark G's post, it begs a reply. Sometimes giving in is the right call, sometimes it isn't. Here's my case in point...

Not to belittle your having been mugged, as being victimized by any potentially violent crime is quite the eye opener, but I once spent several days in hospital after suffering a home invasion, and after second guessing how that scenario would most likely have played out had the perps not fled upon hearing sirens, I know I'm extremely lucky my decision not to fight back didn't cost me my life. And, so it is that my perspective wasn't acquired from watching action-adventure movies.

As for the specific crime of carjacking, sad truth is it too often begins or ends with the thug(s) popping a cap in the victim's head even when they don't resist; a big reason it became a federal offense in 1992. I don't know about where you live, but they don't often put the good guy in jail here for defending himself.

If we can all agree there's two sides to this coin, I believe that's 'nough said. In any event, Situational Awareness is one of the best way to avoid getting involved with such troubles in the first place.

Now back to our regular programming.

Didn't mean to hijack your thread (or start a personal-defense war). That system looks intriguing. I've also thought about having a similar system as well. Would like to hear how it work once you get it installed. The pros and cons. Thanks.

I'm all about the 2nd Amendment, and the 1911 would be my handgun of choice, however, I'd have to agree, your time to react would be very minimal. I would probably just get out of the car and let them drive off. If someone were to break into my house on the other hand, the odds would be greatly in my favor and they would have a lot less chance of survival, besides, they wouldn't be there to welcome me to the neighborhood. Then I would have to deal with California and their anti-gun mentality.

As for the anti car jack system, I don't know what the range of the transmitter is, nor do I know how long the battery lasts. I'll have to bench test it before I start messing with wires on the car. In any event, the parts alone are probably worth more than $10.

The main reason I ordered one, was mainly for anti-theft. If you don't have the transmitter, you wont get far. Of course if somebody really want's it, they will find a way to get it.

I don't plan on installing it for a while yet, since I have a lot of other work to do on the car to get it ready for the so-cal cruise in March, but I'll post updates.

My cop buddy said it best:
The real car thief professionals never get caught.
BUT, most normal people are subject to the Crime of Opportunity.
Meaning that if a normal person walks by a house with a bicycle, etc out in the front yard unattended........there's a chance they will steal it.

What we can do is eliminate the temptation.......visual deterrents-flashing red light, decals, lock your doors, etc.
That will eliminate 90% of the thefts.

If a pro wants your car........they will take it and never be found........so insure it!
