Default Bracket - A/C ?

Can anyone tell me if this bracket is deff. needed. The black bar that goes from the back of the A/C comp. to a bolt on the manifold (under the carb). The A/C is held in place by a cast iron bracket on the bottom, and anothe bracket on top. I took the rear one off, because I knew it was going to be in the way of some new "tall" valve covers im getting. If it is needed, then I'll have to get one made up. But as of now the A/C isn't moving at all.

Nobody? I just would like to know if this is needed or not. Has anybody removed theirs? Thanks.

My opinion is that if GM could have saved a dime by leaving it off they would have. It was not put there for it's looks. I would not leave it off myself. JMHO

Very good point. I guess I'll have to have a machinist make one up for me.

Honestly, I had a 75 and it didn't have that bar. Do you have the long style or the small type compressor? A 75 had the long and didn't have that.

Its the short pan style. It is just shy of the pic. (cut off)

I saw in a recent thread that the upper support on an 82 goes to the exhaust manifold instead of the intake.
Maybe research that and adapt an 82 support....

I'm thinking that bar is for a big block. I had a 68 Impala 396 with factory air and it had the bar.
EGR block off plate is also not stock.

That brace is used on all 77-81 Vettes with the R4 compressor.
Like I mentioned above, the 82 brace may be different.
There's also a similar lower brace that attaches near the fuel pump.

I did the EGR block off.

Thanks, All of the other brackets are on it. I had to move this one due to taller valve covers.
