Depends on what kind of power you want. Yearone has one of the lowest prices for 400 hp. A lot to choose from below that power.
No personal experience with ebay builders but I have read some bad things about some of them. Scared me off of them.
AMEN!! Bought a 300hp 350 from phoenix engine builders off ebay for $2995. The stock l48 in the 74 that was 30+ years old had more power and it was probably running on 2 cyl. when i got it in the oil pump was laying in the bottom of the pan not even screwed in. The shop i had doing all this work called them and they told them because they were not a chevy dealership that i had just voided the warranty.....beware of all ebay crate engines.
I have been looking around and see good deals from GMPP and Yearone. For the prices they are posting with good horsepower numbers, I dont think I could get an engine built for that value. And I think going with GMPP or Yearone would be better for a warranty or guarantee of the quality you will get.
I know someone who has the ZZ383 with a TKO in a C2 that has it detailed to look stock and he couldn't be happier.
At about $5400 it's not cheap (you may be able to get a local dealer to come close to that price) but in the long run it could be the least amount of grief. If you want to run nostalgic valve covers you can buy adapters to convert from center bolt to 4 corner.
Also about $1100 less if your not looking for that kind of power a ZZ4 makes for a fun driver at a great price.
Good luck with what ever you decide.

I've only dealt with enginefactory.com and I highly recommend them. I ordered a 383 Stroker 460 hp for my '74 from them. They email pics and video of the progress as they are building your motor. She hasn 't skipped a beat since installation. You can even choose what color you want the block.
There is and engine builder that i use. I just purchased a 383 sb with alum heads and roller rockers, edl manifold, it included the dyno sheet that was run with me there. Everything is new except the block and crank which are both machined. 448 HP 470 Ft. lbs of torque. This motor makes my 77 really move. you choose the paint color for the block. He is in Ashland, KY. $2,600.00

Yes, let me know too, that's only a couple hours away from me.
I would stick with the well know suppliers unless U know the outfit.
Like GMPP, Summit or Year One.
I checked out several E-Bay engine builders and found them to have bad reputations. One in Portland OR had a D minus BBB rating.

I agree!!! You need to stick with the people you know. Just because the guy lives in Kentucky does not meen he can,t build a great engine. I have three engines he built and probable paid the amount you paid for one. Not all people can pay for a name. I do agree that i would not but an engine off E-Bay.
