seems to me that it came about by some poster being about as lazy as possible. (BTW i own an 04 CE convertible, lol in addition to my 78).
It's a shortcut that people use when typing.
Much like I assume that when you were posting this reply you were being as lazy as possible using BTW, LOL, 04 CE, and 78. I doubt anyone has ever used LOL when talking to someone in person but it is totally acceptable in an online forum.
Not really trying to be a jerk, it's just it was too hard to pass up the lazy as possible portion and then see BTW right next to it.

Is it's a greatly misunderstood and mythical topic that's been thrashed to death at least a thousand times till someone finally comes up with the documents that proves what it really means.
All goes quiet for a few months until a few new players show up and we do it all again.
Actually, convertible and roadster are not interchangeable terms. A roadster is a two seat open vehicle without roll up windows. They had side curtains. A phaeton was a four seat open vehicle without roll up windows. Ditto on the side curtains. The term "convertible" is actually short for convertible coupe (or in the case of four door cars, convertible sedan). Since soft top Corvettes have had roll up windows since the mid 50s, none but those first three or so years (53-55?) can be accurately called roadsters. And, as the owner of a 69 Mustang convertible, no, I don't mind the term "vert" and as the owner of a 69 Corvette coupe I don't mind the term "Vette". I just wish mine were a Vette vert.
