When I bought my 73 they did not have any tips on them. After going through the catalogs and buying lots of parts to fix the car I bought a set of 1973 reproduction tips. Several months later when working on the car I found the previous owner installed mufflers that had the 71-72 offset so mine would not match up. I ended up beating and cutting up the tip shafts to make them fit. I will be ordering a set of 71-72 tips to replace this later.
Its strange how the offset for the 73 doesnt match the earlier years. Was there a reason for making this change?
I was wondering if the change had anything to do with the emissions requirement.
And the repro tips I bought from the catalog are nothing compared to the originals on my 72. The repro tips are tin can thin, while the originals are very thick and heavy. And expensive to replace.
Got a set of original 73 tips on the way. The AIM provides one measurement for installation. Can anyone provide pics of an original installation showing:
1) a shot straight on from the back (to see how they are centered)
2) a shot from the side (to see how far they stick out)
On Ebay. Correct weld seams on the bottom. No part numbers stamped on them. They came off a 454.
If I am not mistaken, yes they did have a seam at the bottom, however I do believe they had a stamp number on originals.
GM 330977
There are some aftermarket ones available now with the bottom seam, maybe that is what you got ???????
