Default 1976 Vega Steering Wheel

If my 1976 C3 has a "Vega" steering wheel, does that mean that I can buy a trick new wheel off ebay that fits a Vega? Has anyone tried that? I just don't want to spend the $189.00 for an adapter if there is a more cost effective way to do it! Also, I herd that you can make any C3 wheel fit with a little cut and paste and drilling. True?

While the 76 steering wheel was used in other models, the steering column probably was not. I would be wary of an aftermarket steering wheel advertised for the Vega.

One of my Corvettes just happens to be a 76...

I personally like the fact that the steering wheel is UNIQUE to that year Corvette and would NEVER even consider replacing it...

The only modifications I made to that car is that the rear window is now removable like the early C3 coupes...

lol... I agree. I have a guy in my club who has a 78 he bought new and it has the Vega wheel. After some research, it turns out that the factory installed that wheel on some 77's and 78's because they didn't want to throw the wheels out or simply not use them. I went round and round with my fellow club member about his wheel. I always thought the wheel was unique to 76's. Not so.......

I was at the Good Guys car show today in San Diego and stopped to talk to a steering wheel vendor. He told me that GM used the same column splines from 69 forward for all their cars. I agree that the trick is the rest of the column. I almost bought a wheel from him for $80, but decided that I'd rather try with a leather wheel from ebay. His was cool, but plastic. I bet I could make one work!

Sorry to break it to you, but my 77 came stock with the same wheel.
77s that had the non-tilt/tele column used the infamous "Vega" wheel.

Mine now sports an after market grant that I like a lot.

Did you use the Grant adapter? Is your column the same as my 76? Picture?

Yep. T/T got the three spoke wheel. I've heard the Vega wheel was used on 78s without T/T, but I've never seen one. See if you can talk your club buddy into posting some pics.

I will if he's still talking to me. I pissed him off over our conversation. He thought I was accusing him of switching it or something else. Who knows. He got really angry! lol...... I'll see what I can do.

My 76 has the tilt and the telescope. Most of the non vega style wheels are deeper and with my height at 6'4" then changing to deeper actually takes away from room my long arms need so I kind of like it. I did wrap it in leather though.

Besides, I pretty much dread taking the column apart.

Your right Lance. I finally solved the head room and butt comfort with the C5 seats, but arm room is important. I don't want to screw that up either.

How did putting c5 seats in help the seating room?

Yes, it came with the wheel. I'm on my second Grant wheel. I liked the look of the second one better than the one I had originally put on it, so I changed it. Don't have pics of the new wheel, but here is a pic of the old one. (disregaurd the rust on the screw heads).

Don't want to hijack the thread, but I like my '76 steering wheel. I think it is more comfortable than my '69 to use. Besides, the new c6 wheel is the same as the malibu's and other lesser cars I think. does that mean we should be changing out all of the c6's? good luck with your change out.

I might be wrong here, but I think 78 and beyond all came standard with the tilt/tele column. I don't think the standard column was an option after 77.
