Would it be bad to just replace the 2 wires with new 10 gauge wire, and eliminate the fuselink?
Were it not for that fusible link opening, you might have had a big electrical fire and lost the entire car! Absolutely replace the fusible link with another link. DO NOT replace it with plain wire.
I had a similar issue this weekend as Mikey, and went to advance auto, and they sold me (2) inline fuses (30) to replace. This is an acutal fuse in the line. Would this suffice, or do I need to get an actual fusible links?
Fusible links are important in circuits affecting safety, e.g., ignition and headlights, for sure. And, they're less susceptible to the effects of ambient heat - especially close to exhaust manifold. You don't want a fuse in the headlight circuit, for example. The fusible link will protect that circuit from catastrophe, but not much short of that will cause the link to part - for good reason!
I recommend replacing the fusible links, but thats JMO.
On an 1980
Larger black battery cable and 2 red fuselink wires to the big battery lug on the solenoid.
Purple wire to the "s" terminal
Nothing to the "r" terminal, in fact the correct solenoid doesn't even have the "r" terminal.
A black wire should be the ground wire. To be sure check it for continuity to ground. I like to tape it back up the harness a bit and use a short bolt to mount it to the back of the head, out of sight and out of mind.
This is how my 81 is wired. Nothing on the R terminal purple on the S terminal. Also when you shorted the big teminal to the S terminal the starter should of turned over. If all you got was a bunch of sparks then the starter is toast....Tim
