I have a '77 but not the stock engine. I have a crazy wild cam in it so er go I have no vacuum. I have an electric pump that I wanted to mount so my headlights still work but I'm not sure of what all piece components I would need to have a functional system. i.e. Is the vacuum canister necessary or can I just use the vacuum bar? Valves etc... Thanks and hope you all are having a good day.
The 'vacuum bar' (if you are describing the stock unit) has adequate volume to act as an accumulator {an odd term for something that has 'nothing' in it}. You will need the vacuum pump, a check valve (that maintains the accumulator vacuum, even if the pump turns off) and maybe a line filter to keep cr@p out of the system.
What is your crazy wild cam. I ran my headlights and wiper door on 8 inches of vacuum with no trouble.
Okay looking at your motor you put down 534 RWHP with a 350 motor you must have big cam in here. Still even if you are just operating our headlights you should be able to create enough vacuum to raise and lower them.
