1981 differential question
Im about to rebuild my rearend and would like to put in a set of 3:54 or 3:73 gears. The question is do I need to replace the carrier unit as well or will it work with the new gears?

You do not have to change the carrier unless something is wrong with it. You just need new ring and pinion and differential rebuilding kit. No thrust washer on 80 - 82 diffs

Stay away from Richmond Gear, used to be great but quality is not what it used to be. I used Richmond first time as gears worn in noise got worse. I think my next set was motive which have been fine so far, for 10,000 miles
