i have sold two cars to guys in europe, both times they came looked at it and paid in cash....i deposited the cash and it took a week or two for them him to get it towed to the shipping container. people who are shipping cars overseas have a bunch of legwork that they have to do to even get the car off of your property.

my new car now was on his way for some weeks, picked up from first ship in L.A. and delivered to Panama, where another ship picked up the container to bring it to Rotterdam or Bremerhaven, just swimming time for all way was 3 weeks but yesterday it arrived.

So now I have to wait for Customs people, they have to check the car because if it wouldnt be original its no oldtimerfor them and then it would be very expensive to pay. Here just original oldtimers with an age of more than 40 years can be imported with a lowered percentage of taxes.

So please cross your fingers for me that also the last things will work fine, thanks !

I believe PayPal.com would be an easy way to sell over seas.

They do it everyday.

Just a thought.

Default Foreign sales - why not?

A couple of thoughts on this post, in no particular order:
  • There are Corvette enthusiast throughout the world
  • Corvettes are usually more expensive outside the US, so buying here makes sense for foreigners. Coming here to check out the car (and/or pay for it in person or throu 3rd party or even paypal) can make the deal financially unattractive, though
  • Yes, caution is understandable and acceptable - but paranoia isn´t!
  • Wire transfers are normal outside the US, checks are sorta outa style in Europe and not at all common anymore
  • Ever imagined how somebody outside the US should get the money here? With no US bank account, no foreign checks being accepted by American banks, no family or reliable friends livin´here to wire the money to? Oh, I already hear them: "Not my problem, if they really want my car..." But honestly, for one second only, try to walk a mile in their shoes. Wiring 20, 30 or 40 thousand bucks to a perfectly stranger at the other end of the world with nothing but his word to release the car upon payment is quite a risk for the buyer as well, isn´t it?!

Here´s my recommendation:
  • Stay cautious, but for Gods sake get real!
  • Make yourself acquaintance with the potential buyer, exchange emails, talk to them on the phone, answer their questions. You´ll find out if they are real!
  • Set up a contract or letter of intent. Exchange driver´s license or personal ID. Check them out on the equivalant of white pages (althoug there´s a chance they are not listed - just like in the US)
  • The separate bank account is a great idea! But don´t be surprised when you get asked for your adress - European banking systems require this information to process the payment
  • When the money comes in and you sign the title you still sit on the car unless the trucking company comes to pick it up. So what´s the risk?! Getting sued by a scammer from out of the country?!

Hello Wolfgang, I am on vacation for the last 10 day looking for that Camaro/Corvette to replace my baby, your baby, LOL. Are we getting excited yet, I'm sure you are. So the car is on dry land now, That's great and every thing at customs should go OK, that car is as original as you can get less the repaint so there should be no problems. Ill be glad when you get It my self. I forgot that I somehow am loged in on this forum sight as a subscriber so the post goes to my e-mail automatically, so for everyone on the post following ( stocki26 ) new baby 69 350/350 Daytona yellow M-20 American classic Corvette, I know he will enjoy many years of cruising the back roads of Eurepe with one of the finest unrestored but steal very drivable 69 Corvettes out there, I'm sure he will be very pleased. Sence we made the deal I have been looking at other cars camaros and corvettes for my next toy but I have yet to come across a corvette that is in as good a condition as the one that stocki26 stole from me LOL. Have a good day Wolfgang let me know when you finally get to see it for the first time, you need to send me a pic of you with the car with a big smile on you face. And all that have an classic corvette are having a good day anyway firstvett69

I think, you guys in USA should chill down a bit about being freaked out as hell of an army of scammers from Europe. I am from Europe and I have bought 4 C3 Vettes from USA, 2 of them from the members of this forum. Both of them provided me with their bank account details to make a wire transfer, which, by the way, is the safest type of making a payment like that. If you want to be super safe, of course, you can open another bank account just for this deal. But for Gods sake - refusing a deal because of buyer asking your bank details? Maybe you should contact your bank manager and speak about the real threats first, instead of "I heard of a guy, who heard of a guy" type of scary stories in the web. At the end of the day, during the deal you a the one to have possession of both car and cash at the same time. The one to risk the most in a deal like that is the buyer. Period. During each of my deals I could have sent 30,000 USD or more to given bank account and then face the fact of seller cutting off all communications and simply disappearing.

I sold my boat to a guy in europe last year and it went fine. I can tell you that a wire, depending on the country it is originating from can take a few days to hit your account here in the U.S. That is what happened with me. He was wiring say on a Monday and the boat was scheduled to be picked up from me on Wednesday to go to a barge and the wire still didn't hit. I didn't let them take the boat and the wire hit on Thursday. They had to wait for the next barge that was transporting but wasn't my problem.

This is kind of cool. Cant wait for the delivery pictures.

Money wise you cant be to careful..but with the internet you hear so much bs..and lets face it..outright lies.

But as long as everyone is patient it can be done. Funny thing is with all of the computers and communications available, banks are dumber than ever.
Much more risk on the buyers end anyway.

OK, wonder why you have that huge
Oh, just looked at the car and can see why..... You lucky man....
Congratulations and please do not look upon all of us as being paranoid about a transaction. Yes everyone needs to be cautions and that includes both the seller and buyer.
Enjoy that car and again congratulations. Keep us posted from time to time as I really enjoy comments and notes from our Euro brothers and sisters.

sorry, but here in Europe all business works that way, no problem for private persons and also not for companys, it is just usual and all of us Europeans do it that way if the objekt to buy cant get payed from eye to eye. It also is the safest way here.

Actually a person that was payed also via account no. now is waiting to receive the money i have sent, after receiving my money this person from a US-Classic-car-company in L.A. will check the car for me because my company /family situation does not allow me to go myself, believe me i would if i could.

So please guys, dont think bad about me because i didnt know how you guys do payments usually if you cannot pay it yourself.

one last word :

even our bank managers here ( i live in a small village here in austria) did not know how to make this transfer, they also had to ask how it would work best and safe, its not all days that someone from a small village near Mattighofen / Upper Austria wants to buy a car in California. This was the only reason why i asked that early for account or such things, just preparing a fair deal.

Trust me, i just wanna buy a nice car and firstvett is still invited to visit me and my family !
No worries.

Well, many of us have been approached by scammers when selling over the internet. The red flags are set by-

-the request for your bank account number,
-or a money order or bank draft - usually in excess of the sale price (with the difference to be kept by you "for your trouble") delivered by a third party driving a tow truck
-rush, rush deal; must take delivery on the spot (before payment can be determined if it is legit...

The point is, we see this type of attempted theft all the time. So, everyone is a little on edge. It sort of puts a real overseas buyer in a bad light, even if he is totally good.

What is this world coming to?

P.

seems I was very lucky with the car I got from firstvett69 .....

really in very good condition, i saw it on all places where I had to work on it.

Not so lucky for me was to find a driver while transport that crashed the shifter, he didnt use the unlock of reverse gear I think.

but I could repair it myself, now I am preparing all other things to get the vette ready for the check to be allowed to drive it here in Austria ..... too much bureaucracy here...
