It doesn't look like a bunch of progress, but I have been able to sand/buff without needing to respray and do some reassembly. For the first time since I dragged this thing home you can walk up to either door, grab the handle and open/close it without fishing a bent piece of rod into the door latch mechanism! I run to Florida in the morning to pick up a TH350C... that's the last major piece needed for the drivetrain. Next up; replace the heater core, steering column, brake booster/master and evap coil then detail the engine bay in preparation for the engine drop. Oh, and find the missing bits for the headlights and reinstall them too. At least there's a bit of daylight after work now.......enjoy the pics.
Looks great compared to when you drug it home! How will you keep somebody from stealing it? It's starting to look good enough that is something to think about. Good luck on the tranny.
At present there's no steering wheel installed... that and the opposed ramp parking arrangement ought to deter the casual thief. The rims have locking lugs, and my retired neighbor with whom I share a driveway keeps an eagle eye on things as well.
That is an amazing job you have done so far. I can't get enough of seeing these car come back to life. Seeing what you started with where you are now, not much to say except, keep up with the great work.
Hey Mark, the car really looks good!! If the timing works out, your welcome to the master and vac booster that comes outta my car when I do the hydroboost. Probably within the next couple of weeks.
Thanks David. I have brand new brake components waiting for me to feel brave enough to dive in. I really appreciate the offer, and the transmission I got yesterday will help a bunch!
Looking fantastic! Love the color and the paint turned out awesome. Congrates on getting your trans picked up as well - starting to come together for you!
Mark is a pretty good mechanic obviously with more than just this project under his belt. I am older in my 60's and when I first got the 76 Vette last fall, I really was a little intimidated about the heavy wrenching work.
However, when I've watched projects like these, studied the books, looked and worked on my car and learned what the pieces are and how the systems work more and more I realized that what has been slowly happening is my knowledge is growing. With the knowledge things that seemed impossible now don't seem so much so. More of a choice now on how to spend my energy than whether I understand it or would not be able to do it. You just slowly build a base of information about these cars and turn around one day and realize you are beginning to understand it mechanically in ways that make it not so intimidating. Some of the best examples for me have been the body off frame restorations (in part or more) where I can see the actual systems and relate them to what is on my car.
Mark just emailed me on another matter and he now has an exhaust system as well but has some family business to attend to with senior family members and it will have to wait just a little. In the meantime, I'm sending lots of energy in his direction as I admire his work and how well involved he stays with parents and family. Mark's a great guy if you get a chance to meet him and his wife, do so. If you are in Savannah some time let him know ahead of time and have dinner...he's a genuine guy and his wife is no less the same. My positive thoughts for his senior family members at the moment.

Well, the last year has been interesting to say the least... I won't go into detail but 2013 should be calmer. Work on the car has gone impossibly slowly but there was a major milestone passed this weekend... the engine is in the car. A friend and I trailered it over to his garage and mated things up, then dragged it back here: first time in direct sunshine in nearly 4 years!
The goodies:
The car; showing some of the interior which is now complete sans doorpanels:
The engine compartment ready for install:
In:
Now to finish this sometime before my birthday in September (I fervently hope!)
Hey Lance. Good to see you're still hanging here! Yes, a TH350C sort of like the original non-lockup TH350 the car came with. Wendy will not drive a stick, and this car is for her as well as me...I'll probably have to build a standard transmission C2 next if I ever want to drive "my" Corvette. It's great to hear from you, and good to be making forward progress again.
The car is looking good! 2013 will be your year...what an amazing ground up renovation. Yes, I still have the 76 in the garage in her flannel dust cover. You would not believe how tough a 76 four speed clutch is to work compared to a 91 ZR-1 zf six speed with hydraulic clutch is. A world of difference. The auto for your fairer half will be better. My other one, the Z, has been re chipped and some other things so it is putting out something around 450 hp and really flies.
The most I've had it is around 140 and that was pretty well loafing still since it wasn't even out of fourth gear.
Driving it to Carlisle, Pa to a private Wazoo outing april 6 weekend where Lance Miller's will have the plenum pulled and do a full injector change, lunch at their house then a few hours in the Miller car collection with 30 other Z owners. Should be a good drive up and back. Millers are half of the group that puts on 17 national car shows a year and this should be fun.
Then in May on the 15-19 will drive it to Bowling Green to the National Corvette Museum to be with both ZR-1s and Grand Sports C4's. Some area drives, various other things. No factory tour as it won't resume them until fall which I was hoping to do as well. 646 miles each way on the Interstates.
Be well and enjoy. Every time I think about selling the 76 I look at it and shake my head no. Still a thing of beauty as sculpture and as an "antique" only costs me a couple hundred a year and a garage slot to own.
Hey Mark, it's good to see you working on your car again. The painters finally finished my CE and i put it back togather and pretty much parked it during the winter. All i lack is a small amount of interior work and it will be all done. I'm thinking of selling it and doing another, What do you think?

Lance... your dogs will never forgive you for deserting them most of the summer!
Charles... Yes please to another project, and another after that! A man needs something to look forward to!
Brent... Thanks. Whenever someone tells me they can't do project X for whatever reason I just smile and nod my head. All things are possible if you are determined and can think a bit outside the box.
