No wrong air cleaner. Should be an open element if I remember correctly.

My Prince "Restoration Guide" states, " The majority of the 1970 Vettes used an open element air cleaner assembly. 1970s assembled after appx mid June 1970, except for LT1's, used the 1971-1972 closed element air cleaner...." My car was assembled in March 1970....so I am guessing it should be an open element. Is this the correct breather for those later 71's and 72's?????

Not sure of the break off date for the 70 cars but 71,72 cars used the one you have on the base motor cars. The LT1s used the open element

The breather pipes look correct. I think the hose is wrong.
I believe it should be "L" shaped like this.

Given the build date of your car though, I think you are correct. It should be a open element unit.

I think you guys are exactly correct. Can anyone post a pic of the open element breather? Are they still available, or do most people just use the common after market look-alikes???? Thanks, Bros! Lee

Paragon repros a correct 70 open element air cleaner, which includes the otiginal silk screened instructions, on the underside of the lid. It lists for about $120 in flash chrome (which is correct, but looks crappy) or $160 with a much better looking triple chrome lid.

The $100 repros of the 14" open element air cleaner are fine, if you don't need the silk screened instructions. Just watch out for the ones made by Noah, as the bases don't fit well.

Make sure to order the air cleaner stud and wing nut too, as that bolt holding your air cleaner, is not correct.

Big block shown, but the open element air cleaners are the same.

1971

You can still find original open element air cleaners, complete with the silk screened instructions on the underside of the lid. Expect to pay accordingly when you find one.

Hi pd,
Yes!
The last 5 digits of the VIN are the build number for that car.
12345..... the 12 thousand, 3 hundred, and 45th car built that model year.
That sequence number is stamped on the engine pad and also on a plate with that number stamped on it is pop riveted to the driver's side windshield pillar.
Regards,
Alan
