I recently acquired a 68 vette, with no ignition key or door key. Is the door key the same as the ignition key? Will the door tumbler have a code so I can have the ignition key made?
Original from the factory, the door and ignition operated on the same key and I do believe there is a key code on the door lock. If memory serves me correctly, GM stopped stamping key codes on the door locks in the early 70's.
I am not sure about the 68 but my 70 has the same keys for both door and ignition. If you pull the door lock it should have the code stamped on it. It would be a B-50 key blank and the code should read 0P00 to 9P99. If you have another code it is not the original lock. I have a Curtis key book and can give you the key cuts if you need them. I believe that GM started using this key system in 1967 but in later years the door and ignition keys were different this occurred sometime after 1973.
Brought my 2 door locks and storage lock from my 68 to a local locksmith recently. He gave me a key code card with them. It says door and ignition key is
Thanks garage ghost, geeeeeez what was I thinking...... actually I wasnt.
If you're the paranoid type, you can also buy a new set of door locks and an ignition switch that are keyed the same but use a different key code. I had to do this for the round key on my car as it didn't come with one. I just bought a new set of glove compartment and spare tire locks and changed out what I had. I don't know if the NCRS types can tell they and the key are repros or not, but I sure can't.
